Beginning the Journey:

We are keenly aware that initiating the therapeutic process for your child can be a daunting task. For that reason, we are here to assist you every step of the way. Be assured that no question is too small, as all of the information gathered will be used collectively to determine the appropriate evaluation for your child. Once your first visit is scheduled, you will receive a welcome email with all necessary paperwork needed or they can be conveniently downloaded here.

The patient history is an integral component of the evaluation process. With your signed consent, we are available to discuss your child’s abilities with other professionals to identify where we can best improve their overall development. We strictly adhere to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) guidelines ensuring the utmost importance of confidentiality in our practice.

The Evaluation Process:

Your child’s adventure begins in our sensory enriched waiting area. When you arrive at the initial evaluation, you will be greeted and encouraged to make yourself comfortable. Parents may be asked to participate in the evaluation with your child depending on the tests being administered and/or the child’s age. Other parents may be asked to observe through a one-way window in the waiting area. It has been our experience that most children do better when working with a therapist one-on-one. This enables us to get the most accurate assessment of your child’s performance with standardized values.

We strive to ensure that the evaluation process is as stress free as possible. In fact, we are skilled at working with children who may present with separation anxiety. We can engage children in our friendly and inviting atmosphere. An extensive sensory motor-based evaluation includes the implementation of various standardized gross motor tests, parent and/or teacher questionnaires, and interviews. Additionally, we will observe the child’s natural play patterns while extrapolating valuable clinical information which will then be incorporated with the parents’ goals in order to design the child’s plan of care. The standardized testing along with the child’s unstructured free play varies from approximately one to two hours. At times, it may be necessary to complete the assessment over a period of two visits.

After the Evaluation:

We will schedule a follow-up consultation where we will discuss your child’s objective findings and review an appropriate therapeutic plan, typically 1-2 weeks after the assessment. If therapy is deemed necessary and/or beneficial to your child’s development, we require a physician’s prescription in order to initiate medical treatment. We will fax a plan of care to your referring MD for the completed prescription to be returned to our office. In many instances, we may need your assistance to expedite the process. Therapy will commence immediately after we obtain the signed prescription.
